Rebuilding a Shared Family Beach Hut

Designing a Family Beach Hut

A treasured family beach hut

Hut 70 sits in a very prominent position on Mudeford Spit and can be seen as soon as you disembark from the jetty. The owners are one of the longest standing families on the Spit. Three siblings grew up spending their time at the beach and now, each having families of their own, the beach hut is shared between the families and is being used more than ever.

We were thrilled to be appointed for the design and rebuild of their beach hut and were tasked with creating something that would better suit the growing family's needs. After spending time with the family to discuss their rebuild project, considering each family member's wants and needs, we were able to come up with a design that was right for their own personal requirements.

Being longer than a standard beach hut, we were able to incorporate a separate rear bedroom as well as a full-length mezzanine, vastly increasing the sleeping capabilities of the hut.

Adding practical, modern features

By using a single side door as access to the hut, we were able to retain more internal wall space, which in turn meant they were better able to accommodate furniture. We included a large panoramic window, which also enabled the family to take in the stunning views their position benefits from.

This was a full turn-key project and timber-clad interiors were installed throughout the hut as was full plumbing and solar powered electric systems. Outside the hut, we built a long side deck that creates a striking feature, allowing the family to take full advantage of the southerly facing elevation that stays in the sun long into the summer evenings.

Finally, with the family all being watersports enthusiasts we incorporated secure under-decking storage, which spreads out underneath the beach hut. Having this area clad with timber not only allows the family to safely store their equipment, but improves the overall aesthetics of the hut as well.

We can wholly recommend Pete Samson and Ecologic Developments for hut rebuilds, having used him last year. Pete has developed a good name for himself on Mudeford Spit and continues to do so. Not a single person I spoke to had a bad word to say about him or his work. From the very first meeting to discuss our requirements it was obvious that Pete was experienced and professional. He was completely thorough regarding the requirements, offering suggestions without forcing his ideas upon us, and able to share the years of experience that he has acquired. The quote was competitive and detailed and captured all the requirements we had discussed during the first meeting. There were no hidden costs making it easy to know what the overall cost would be.

Pete has a calm and quietly spoken air about him which was tremendously useful when dealing with all the members of our family who had a say in the rebuild. Ours is a shared family hut and therefore having to make decisions was sometimes not straightforward to say the least. Pete was extremely diplomatic when progressing the build and was always a pleasure to deal with. There were numerous reasons why we chose Pete to complete our rebuild, but a significant point was the fact that the hut would be built in the dry and not open to the elements. We were able to visit Pete's workshop to check the progress and watching the hut being lowered into position by crane was a truly spectacular day.

Pete's team are as professional and efficient as he is and the quality of the workmanship is second to none. As we head into our second season with our new hut we can also confirm that Pete remains approachable regarding any after-care issues. Suffice to say we are delighted with the hut which will bring many years of happiness for all the family and if anyone would like to call in to see it or speak to us in person please feel free to knock on the door.
