'Big Red' - Mudeford Spit, Dorset

Mudeford Beach House by Ecologic Developments

A modern yet timeless beach house

The story of 'Big Red' is one that made it into the national press, with the Metro and The Daily Mail Online running stories on our innovative delivery method we used to get this beach hut to site.

Late in the summer of 2013 we were approached by Sarah and Mike to take a look at possible designs for their beach hut at Mudeford. We quickly formulated some preliminary design suggestions for the couple, who were looking to achieve a modern yet timeless design that would offer plenty of space and light inside, whilst keeping it practical for their young family. Our advanced 3D modelling system allowed them to get a very accurate picture of the possibilities of their new hut prior to proceeding with the build.

If the site and route-to-site allow, we strive to employ an off-site construction system in our New Forest workshop. This enables us to work in a controlled environment without being exposed to the elements. When construction is finished, we then deliver the completed unit to the site as one finished, weather-tight structure.

Beach hut delivery

We'd previously built and delivered over 20 huts to Mudeford using this off-site construction technique, however, Big Red was too big to fit through the narrow woodland track that provides access to Mudeford Spit. This forced us to explore alternative routes in order to retain our preferred off-site build method.

Having grown up in the area we knew that our local boatyard had two ex-military pontoons that they use to float in mobile homes to their similarly tight access site. We approached Matt Elkins at the yard who kindly agreed to help and a plan was formed to float Big Red down the river, bypassing the tight woodland.

Big Red also faced us with the challenge of getting her out of our yard and along the narrow New Forest roads in order to get to the drop off point at the river. Luckily this is where we handed things over to our highly accomplished transport contractor Malcolm Elvy who has an impressive client list including the RNLI, as well as having had the prestigious task of transporting the Queen's barge for the Diamond Jubilee Pageant.

"We didn't need to look far before we found Pete and the Ecologic team and knew straight away we were in safe hands. Innovative ideas and experience were important to us in the design stage brief and Pete did not let us down. Communication throughout the rebuild together with high standards of workmanship from the start through to completion were evident. We are overwhelmed with the results. Truly stunning and unique! We would not hesitate in recommending Pete and his team but we think the hut speaks for itself. Looking forward to many happy years and memories on the spit. Many thanks."
